Japanese hanging scroll, mid Edo period, 18th century.
A fine antique painting of a standing beauty under a cherry tree, which depicts a famous scene of a Japanese poem made in Heian period, 10-11th century in Japan. Painted on silk with ink and pigments. It comes in a paulownia wood box. Signed Keishu and sealed. The signature reads it was painted when the artist was sixty one years old, which was in 1789. The inscription above is a 31-syllable Japanese poem called waka by a foremost Japanese female poet active during mid- Heian period, 10-11th century called Akazome Emon. The poem translates;

It seems a waste to step on such a beautiful flower leaves But there will be no where I can go if I avoid treading on. It is such a beautiful cherry blossom that agitates myself.

Itaya Keishu (1729−1797) was a Japanese painter active during mid-late Edo period, 19th century. He studied (1705−1777) under Sumiyoshi Hiromori and with his recommendation, keishu became a court painter retained by the Tokugawa shogunate.
