江戸時代後期の画家。明和4年生まれ。尾張(愛知県)の人。京都で土佐光貞(みつさだ)にまなぶ。法橋(ほっきょう)。古画の模写をとおして古土佐派の技術を研究,復古大和絵派の祖といわれる。門人に浮田一(いっけい),渡辺周渓。文政6年3月21日死去。57歳。名は敏。字(あざな)は虎頭。別号に得中,過不及子。作品に「百花百草図屏風(びようぶ)」など。
A cat sleeps under peony flowers. The full-blown flowers suggest
that it is spring. Signed Totsugen and sealed.It is painted on silk
with ink and pigments, and accompanied by a paulownia wooden box
with an inscription by Hibino Hakkei (1825 - 1914)authenticating the
painting.
Tanaka Totsugen (1767-1823) was a Japanese painter active in late
Edo period. In his early life, he was a monk of Nichiren sect of
Buddhism as well as mastered Tendai sect.He studied under the artist
of Kano school, Ishida Yutei (1721-1786) while he was still a monk,
and after Yutei’s death,He returned to secular life and began
studying painting under Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806) of the Tosa
school.
Totsugen was well known as a father of the revival of traditional
Japanese painting.
The scroll is in reasonable condition with some light stains on the
painting due to its age.
There are stains, tiny insect damages and light damages on the
