室町-戦国時代の画家。備中(びっちゅう)(岡山県)出身。俗姓は小田。応永27年生まれ。出家して京都相国寺にはいり,画を周文にまなんだ。40歳すぎ,大内氏の周防(すおう)山口にうつり雲谷庵をひらく。応仁元年、明にわたり、2年後に帰国。独自の山水画を追究し、日本の水墨画を大成した。永正(えいしょう)3年死去。87歳。

本紙は、染み、汚れ、時代やけ、巻きしわがあります。
表装は、時代感、上部に染みがあります。
A fine painting of a landscape depicted on paper with ink and light
pigments. This piece is accompanied by a scroll bar with ivory ends.
The painting was mounted on the superb silk brocade fabric with real
gold thread by the previous collector. The box was prepared for this
painting during mid Edo period, in 1775, which is dated on the lid.
The painting is unsigned and the particular stylistic and technical
features suggest that it was rendered in a similar way to the Sesshū
school (Unkoku school).
Sesshū Tōyō (1420-1506) was the most prominent Japanese master of
ink wash painting during Muromachi – Sengoku period (the Warring
States period) in Japan.He was influenced by Chinese Song Dynasty landscape paintings and
traveled to Ming Dynasty in China, where he was also recognized as
an outstanding artist.
There are some light stains, folding creases and foxing on the
painting associated with age.There is a stain on upper section of the mounting. It is in
