幕末・明治の日本画家。山口県生。名は幸太郎。
狩野勝川院の門に入り、橋本雅邦と並び称された。
西洋画の写実技法や明暗法を取り入れ、日本画の新しい方向を求めた。
また東美校の設立にも尽力した。明治21年(1888)歿、61才。
本紙は、時代感あります。
表装は、傷み無くきれいです。
Hanging scroll painting, 19th century.
A fine ink wash painting of cliff landscape with a five -storied
pagoda in the distance depicted on paper with ink.
This piece is accompanied by scroll bar with ivory end. There is an
inscription on the paulownia wood box stating the artist name Kano
Hogai and the painting is authenticated by Honda Tenjo (1867-1946),
who was a pupil of Hogai.
Kano Hogai (1828-1888) was one of the last Kano painters active
during late Edo – Meiji period. Ernest Fenollosa (1853-1908), an art
critic and collector from New England, became a strong patron of
Hogai after meeting him in 1883.
