A
fantastic painting of two samurai warriors dressed in armor in
battle. There is no artist signature on the painting but the artist
name Tosa Mitsuyoshi
is seen on the lid of the storage box, which is severely damaged due
to its age. It is painted on silk with ink and pigments.
Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1700 – 1772) Mitsuyoshi was a Japanese painter
active in the mid Edo period (1603-1867), and the son of Tosa
Mitsusuke (1675-1710).
When his father passed away, he became custodian by the head of the
Imperial Art Studio at eleven years of age.
He painted a folding screen for the 115th Emperor of Japan, Emperor
Sakuramachi on the first harvest festival after the Emperor’s
accession to the throne.
The scroll is in good condition with some light stains associated
with age. Some marks, damages and light tears are present on upper
part of the mounting near the scroll bar. |
