Cut off excess fabrics after forming mounting fabrics for hanging scroll. This process is called mimidachi, literally
meaning cut off the ear. After cutting the fabrics fold over of the edge, which is called mimiori, literary meaning
folding the ears to make a “hem”.

To cut off the excess fabrics, firstly decide the width of the mounting. Allow about 4mm-5mm for a margin to
fold over. In order to cut off the fabrics accurately, fold back the fabrics to make a cutting line. After cutting,
glue the fibers of frayed edges with thick paste
called katanori.

Next, adhere the margin of the fabrics with paste, which is thinly diluted with water and slightly harder than
mizunori (liquid paste). After gluing the margin, attach a paper strips called tegami. Tegami is made of Japanese
washi paper with frayed edges. It is attached in order to prevent the backing paper from splitting. The diluted
paste is used here to avoid the tegami from shrinking on the finished scroll.
