History of Hyoso

Frame

The frame originated from tengaku, which was a carved wooden sign board hung at temple or shrine.
Tengaku were originally introduced from China to Japan. Throughout history tengaku has changed its
style in the way that it was coated with colours. It began to be hung in private houses. Later, during
the Meiji period, the western frame became more popular. It was different from the Japanese frame
(unban) which was hung from the upper groove of the sliding door.
