Scroll and Book

In Japan a scroll is called “makimono” or “kansu”, which refers to not only the scroll but also
a folding book, calendar and a picture scroll. They were made by soko-shi and designed to be
conveniently stored or handy to carry about. The first folding book was said to have been made
by a Japanese daimyo warrior Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ordered a book for a collection of old
calligraphy writing. This collection was made in the form of an album by folding up a long scroll.
