The work was slightly damaged. The gofun (white pigment) had been peeled off.
On the navy ground some rain stains and marks were visible. Overall the pigments
were unstable and firstly we needed to improve the stability by applying glue.
We created the background colour by mixing paints carefully adjusted and applied
to the painting. The works were pressed to ensure stability.
A handmade washi paper (maniai-gami) was used as a surface paper for the screen.
Also an antique fabric was applied for the surrounding section of the painting called
ooberi. Finally the frame was finished in matte lacquer consistent with age.
This restoration process took about a year to be completed. |
