The history Ryozenji temple
was opened by Gyoki Bosatsu for the Tempyo era (729-48) that is caused by the prayer of
the inperial ordinance of the Emperor Shomu. Kobo Daishi stayed here for twenty-one days,
he got hold of Buddha's teachings, and he prayed to open the 88 Buddhist temples in
Shikoku, For this time he was inspired by Shaka Nyorai, he carved this figure and he made
the principle image of this, then he built a temple and he enshrined it. He named it
Jikuwasan Ryozenji temple in the sence of that the spiritual mountain in Tenjiku was
transfered to out country. Arter that, Taishi looked for the training hall of Dainichi
Nyorai's Taizokai Mandara in Shikoku, he made the training hall-a religious awaking (the
province of Awa), ascetic practices (the province of Tosa), Bodhi )the province of Sanuki)
- of each province, and he opened the 88 Buddhist temples in these training hall, he
decided to make Ryozenji temple the first temple of the 88 Buddhist temple. After that,
the desting of the temple prospered very much, but many temples and pagodas were destroyed
by a fire caused by war of Chosogabe's army for the lensyo era (1573-93). It was rebuilt
by and by, but it was destroyed except for the main temple and Tahoto by the outbreak of
fire from the temple for the virgil 24 in the Meige era, the present building is rebuilt
after that. The main temple was disolved and restored to its former condition 40 in the
showa era. |
fine view The principal image of Buddha 'Shaka Nyorai' is enshrined in the grand main temple, and a pirgrim can receive giving the commandments of Buddhism when a pilgrim starts in the Taishido at the right hand. Giving the commandments of Buddhism is Juzendai (ten good admonition), that is to take ten oaths-Fusessho (must not kill a living thing), Fuyuto (must not steal), Fujain (must not commit adultery), Fumogo (must not tell a lie), Fukigo (must not tell the word of an affection), Fuwarukuchi (must not say abuse), Furyozetsu (must not be double-tongued), Fukenhin (must not covet), Fushini (must not get angre) Fujaken (must not think of injustice), and then to become Kobo-Daishi's pupil to keep to this. Although a pilgrim can not receive giving the commendments of Buddhism, if he continue the pilgrimage without losing only this mind, he can commune with unknown pilgrims warmly, and he can continue a pleasant journey. The main priest's residential quarters attached to this Buddhist temple is the main head office of the pilgrimage in Shikoku, and here you can prepare the women hat, the stich and the white coat and so on of the utensils for pilgrimage use and the note or the hanging scroll to offer a copy of a sutra to temple to temples. It is customary that the pilgrim pays a visit of thanks to Koyasan after he finished the pilgrimage of the 88 Buddhist temples and Kechien at Okuboji temple, but it is to be desired that a pilgrim pays a visit of thanks to this first temple in Shikoku. |
Old days Saburo Emon who was a greedy millonaire lived in the village of Ebara
Ukiana-Gun in the provice of Iyo. One day a shabby begging bonze visited him at front of
the gate, but Sabro Emon didn't know that this priest was Kobo Daishi, and hi picked up
and dashed the religious mendicancy of the priest, However his eight sons died one after
another after that, greedy and unfeeling Saburo Emon felt fear by this, he turned cruelty,
he became a priest and ge started on the journy of the pilgrimage in Shikoku to search for
Taishi. It is said that this is the start of the pilgrimage in Shikoku. However hard he
went round the sacred place in Shikoku, he couldn't meet Taishi, at last while he
continued the pilgrimage twenty one times, he was down by a illness at the foot of
Shozanji temple in the province of Awa 2 in the Tencho era (831), his life was hanging by
a thread. Then kobo Daishi appeared suddenly at hisbeside, Taishi let him take hold of the
stone of 5.4 centimater carved Saburo Emon's name in his hand, then he died in peace.
After thet Sokutoshi Kono who was a local powerful family had a baby boy, but the boy had
clenchd his reght first for days and it didn't open, so he offered a prayer with a vow at
a temple, the stone written Saburo Emon went out of the hand of the boy. So the very boy
was reffered to as a second Saburo Emon, as they offered the stone to the fifty-first
temple regulary visited by pilgrims-Anyoji temple in Iyo, the title of the temple was
changed as Ishiteji temple. (From the history of Ishiteji temple)
