The historyWhen Kobo Daishi
came around this place,a maiden was working at the loom in a poor house.Taishi called at
the house and asked her "Today is the term of my vow for seven days, because my
clothes got dirty,I want cloth,"Then the daughter generously cut the cloth which shi
was working at the loom until now by scissors and gave Taishi it.Taishi heard her say
"I want Kannon by some means or others to pray to the Buddha for the repose of her
father and mother's soul",he stayed at the house and carved the image of the Senju
Kannon. And he got her to enter the Buddhist priesthood, built the temple and installed
Kannon in it. It is said that before long the daughter attained Buddhahood when she was
living and she became the incarnation of Kannon. The image of the "Hatakiri
Kannon" which has scissors and cloth according to legend is built in the precincts.
Taishi built the building of the temple, named it Tokudazan・Kirihataji temple, and decided
tomake it the tenth Buddhist temple. The principal image-Senju Kannon is installed facing
south and the image of the Kannon of Nyoninsokushinjobutsu (the deughter who attainrd
Buddhahood) is installed facing north in the main temple.

fine viewIt is
comparatively the easy route of the pilgrimage as for as the ninth Buddhist temple, but
this temple is on the high mountain and the very long steep stoping rises to the temple,it
is appropriate to the stop of the tenth. After you go through the vermilion-lacquered main
gate of the Buddhist temple, there are 300 steeps stone steps. If you reach the top of the
stone steps, there is the main temple of a distinctive quality,Taishido on the right, the
place to ofter a copy of a sutra in Hojo (the living space for the chief prirst) on the
left side.If you go up the stone steps from the left of the main temple, there are Fudoto
and at the inside Tahoto which is a peculitar shape and was dismantled from Sakai by the
second shogunate of Hidetada Tokugawa. It is designated as prefectural cultural assets. |
